Questions

Brakes FAQs

More answers on our FAQ page.

How often should brake pads be replaced?

There is no fixed mileage – it depends on how and where you drive. Stop-start London traffic wears pads faster than motorway miles. Front pads often last 20,000 to 40,000 miles. We measure pad and disc thickness at every service and MOT and tell you how much life is left.

Why are my brakes squealing?

Squealing can be worn pads hitting their wear indicator, glazed pads, or dust and moisture after the car has stood still. Grinding is more serious and usually means metal-on-metal contact that damages the discs. If the noise does not clear after a few stops, get the brakes checked.

How often should brake fluid be changed?

Most manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every two years. The fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can make the pedal feel soft under hard braking. We can test the fluid’s condition and change it as part of a service.
