Engine diagnostics

Engine diagnostics and warning lights

A diagnostic check reads the fault codes stored by your car’s computer and then tests the parts involved to find the real cause. A code points to a system, not always to a faulty part. Modern Motors in NW3 investigates warning lights, misfires, power loss and starting problems, then explains the fix and price.

Questions

Diagnostics FAQs

More answers on our FAQ page.

Can I keep driving with the engine warning light on?

If the light is steady and the car feels normal, drive gently and get it checked soon. If it is flashing, or the car is losing power, misfiring or overheating, stop as soon as it is safe – a flashing light often means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

Does a diagnostic check tell you exactly what is wrong?

Not on its own. A fault code tells us which system has reported a problem, such as a sensor reading out of range. It may be the sensor, the wiring or the thing it measures. That is why we follow the code with tests to confirm the actual cause before replacing anything.

Will an engine warning light fail an MOT?

Yes. Since 2018 an illuminated engine management light is an MOT failure on cars that have one. Other warning lights, such as ABS, airbag or brake fluid warnings, can also cause a fail. Getting the fault diagnosed before your MOT saves a retest.
